Screening For Environmental Concerns The document Screening For Environmental Concerns at Sites With Contaminated Soil and Groundwater (May 2008) is a technical report prepared by staff of the California Regional Water Quality Board, San Francisco Bay Region. Information provided in the document is not intended to establish policy or regulation. The document presents lookup tables of conservative Environmental Screening Levels ("ESLs") for over 100 chemicals commonly found at sites with contaminated soil and groundwater, a description of how they were developed, and provides lookup tables. Try the ESL Surfer, an easy-to-use, electronic version of the lookup tables that allows you to input site-specific information and retrieve Tier 1, soil, groundwater, surface water, indoor air and soil gas screening levels for the selected chemical and site scenario. The new, Excel-based Surfer includes a glossary and a summary of information on the chemical selected. To use the ESL Surfer you must have Excel 2003 or later installed on you computer.
