Conceptual Approach for Developing Nutrient
TMDLs for San Francisco Bay Area Waterbodies, Staff
Report to Water Board,
June 18, 2003
Background:
| The
The Napa River and its tributaries provide habitat for
a diverse array of aquatic life, including steelhead
trout and chinook salmon. Excessive nutrients
(nitrogen and phosphorus) have impaired the habitat
value of this river system as well as detracting
from the river's recreational value. The primary
symptoms of excessive nutrient loading in this
watershed are the dense growth of algae and resultant depletion
of dissolved oxygen, which is essential for aquatic life. Potential sources of nutrients
include wastewater discharges, faulty septic systems,
agricultural and urban runoff, and livestock. The
Napa River Nutrient TMDL will examine this problem,
identify significant nutrient sources, and specify
solutions. |
