Septic Tank Nutrient Removal
Ventura Regional Sanitation District
0-047-254-0
$129,703
8/1/00-6/15/01
Project Description
This project has involved a side-by-side demonstration of the individual disposal system nutrient and pathogen removal processes of several manufacturers. The project has demonstrated advanced individual disposal system effluent quality improvement for several treatment processes. For further information, please contact Mark Capron at 805 658-4606.
Project Outcome
(August 2005 update) The tested systems provide treatment comparable to a Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTW).All systems removed more than 67 percent of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and more than 80 percent of Total Suspended Solids (TSS). Four systems consistently exceeded the BOD and TSS goals of less than 30 mg/L. All systems reduced total nitrogen. The most effective system put out a reduced mean total nitrogen (TN) concentration of 11.4 mg/L.

Los Angeles Volunteer Monitoring & Education
Southern California Marine Institute
0-123-254-0
$95,000
1/1/1-4/1/3
Project Description
This project has created an illustrate field guide for sampling and analysis performed by volunteer citizens. In addition, the project has assisted in coordination of regional volunteer monitoring efforts, as well as increasing public awareness in the Los Angeles Region about water resources. For further information, please contact Crystol Brandt at 310 519-3181.
Project Outcome
(July 2005 update) An illustrated field guide for volunteer monitors was developed, the Freshwater and Marine Team Field Guide, for both sampling and analysis. Specific quantifiable grant results include: 11,044 valid data points were taken, 171 water chemistry and 131 bacterial sites were monitored, 20 parameters were tested, 18 volunteer and high school groups helped in this water quality monitoring, 10 snapshot events were coordinated to increase monitoring frequency, testing equipment was updated with more accurate and easier use models, five training and five quality assurance sessions were held, as well as field consultations with monitoring groups to assess the training sessions’ effectiveness, and a consolidated database was developed that includes data collected since June 1998. Calleguas Creek Watershed Treatment-Phase III
Ventura Resource Conservation District
1-135-254-0
$297,400
Project Description
The aim of this project is to reduce sediment leaving orchards and stream banks within the watershed. This phase focuses on the ‘in the ground’ placement of Best Management Practices (BMP’s) that were demonstrated in the first two phases of the project. The BMP’s will be put in place through the incentive of cost-share and permit streamlining. For further information, please contact Patricia Oliver at 805 386-4685.

Ventura River Stream Team
Santa Barbara Channelkeeper
$94,300
Project Description
This project has ensured the continuation of the Ventura River Watershed Monitoring Program, a volunteer-based water quality monitoring program. The Ventura Stream Team is continuing to build a comprehensive long term dataset to define degraded areas and potential sources of pollution. For further information, please contact Jessica Altstatt at 805 563-3399.
Project Outcome
(April 2006 update) Since 2001, there have been over 300 water quality monitoring volunteers collecting data. Total volunteer field hours exceed 3,600. For more information, visit the Ventura River Stream Team Website at http://www.stream-team.org/Ventura/main.html.

Calleguas Creek Water Quality Monitoring Program
Wishtoyo Foundation
03-063-554-0
$80,680
9/15/03- 06/30/06
Project Description
This project educates and trains volunteers in comprehensively monitoring water quality throughout the 343 square miles of the Calleguas Creek Watershed.  Data generated is being used in extensive Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) development and implementation, leading to improved water quality.  This watershed includes many impaired sections of stream.  For more information, please contact Damon Winy at 805 382-4340, or contact Mati Waiya at 805 658-1120; or vck@wishtoyo.org and http://www.wishtoyo.org
Project Outcome
(April 2006 update) Calleguas Creek flows through five cities and many acres of agricultural lands treated with a wide variety of pesticides. Some creek sections are also channelized with concrete. Water Quality monitoring data will be reported to the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board for the needed corrective actions, as the Calleguas Creek Watershed is listed as impaired for a number of substances. Santa Clara River Volunteer Monitoring
Friends of the Santa Clara River
04-128-554-0
11/04-12/07
Project Description
The extensive Santa Clara River Watershed contains numerous endangered species, extensive riparian habitats, the brackish Santa Clara Estuary, recreational lakes of imported water, extensive valuable agricultural beneficial uses, and some of the fastest growing communities in California. Short term goals of the project include verifying ammonia and nutrient loading estimates used in the Santa Clara River Nutrient TMDL from non-point sources through monitoring, collecting and analyzing physical and chemical water quality parameters associated with beneficial uses on a monthly basis. Long term goals include acquiring background nutrient data for use in estimating the success of Best Management Practices to be put in place during the Nitrogen TMDL for the Santa Clara River, providing background and monitoring data on ammonia to the southern steelhead recovery plan now in development by the National Marine Fisheries Service. Additional long term goals include developing and expanding the base of volunteers for stream monitoring through training and field work, and performing public outreach to educate the public and local landowners relative to pollutant source control. For further information, please contact Ron Bottorff at 805/498-4323.
