UST Program - Field-Based Research Fact Sheet

NO COST TESTING OF YOUR UST SYSTEMS

* Updated February 26, 2001
Introduction Your facility has been selected to participate in a Field-Based Research project to test underground storage tanks (USTs). The project was initiated in response to a legislative mandate in Senate Bill 989, signed by Governor Davis in October 1999.
Purpose The purpose of this project is to:
  • field test the effectiveness of the new and upgraded UST systems and
  • identify whether UST components are leaking.
Testing method The Tracer TightÒ test method will be used by Tracer Research Corporation to test selected tank systems. Tracer TightÒ is an innovative technology with proven sensitivity to:
  • assess the integrity of a UST system and
  • identify the location of a potential release from a UST system.
This method is third-party certified and has been successfully used for ten years.
Scope of the project A total of 180 facilities in six areas of the state will be tested during the next two years. Your facility has been selected through a random computer drawing of tank owners in your county to have your underground storage tank systems tested as a part of the Field-Based Research project.Testing in the Sacramento/Yolo area * began November 22, 2000.Participants need to know that:
  • the project is funded by the State of California,
  • there is no cost to the participant for the UST testing, and
  • as a tank owner, you will be responsible for any repairs, including associated costs, to your UST system resulting from identification of leaking component(s).
Benefits
  • Your involvement in this project will provide assurance that your UST systems are installed properly and are working as designed. Early detection and repair of a leaking system will reduce not only the amount of damage done to the environment, but the cleanup-related expenses as well.
  • The testing done for the Field-Based Research project satisfies the State requirements for "enhanced" leak detection of tank facilities with a single-walled component(s) within 1,000 feet of a public drinking water well.
Enclosures To familiarize you with the project, we have enclosed the following:
  • a fact sheet,
  • a summary of the project tasks,
  • literature from Tracer Research,
  • a question and answer sheet, and
  • an "Access Agreement".
Test Schedule To participate and be notified of the test schedule, please:
  • sign the "Access Agreement" form and
  • return the signed form to:
