Water designated as MUN shall not contain concentrations of chemical constituents in excess of the maximum contaminant level (MCL) or secondary maximum contaminant level (SMCL) based upon drinking water standards specified in Title 22 of the California Code of Regulations. The Lahontan Basin Plan also has regionwide turbidity objective for other beneficial uses that states: Waters shall be free of changes in turbidity that cause nuisance or adversely affect the water for beneficial uses. Increases in turbidity shall not exceed natural levels by more than 10%.

The water quality data were collected by the Alpine Watershed Group at one sampling location (Red Lake Creek at Blue Lakes Road) between 12/11/2010 and 3/11/2017. The concentration in the raw data ranged between 43.3 mg/L and 180 mg/L. This resulted in eight mean of monthly mean values, of which five exceeded the objective for total dissolved solids.

The objective is 80 mg/Land is applied as the mean of monthly means calculated on an annual basis. Red Lake Creek is a tributary to the East Fork Carson River.
