‘Bird Rock’ Area of Special Biological Significance (ASBS) has only 0.3 miles of coastline and is very remote. The National Park Service manages the wilderness shoreline (Point Reyes National Seashore), and a portion of the ASBS lies in the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary.

Most runoff comes from coastal cliffs.

The main pollution threats are nitrogen and pathogens from wildlife waste, and the outflow from Tomales Bay.

This ASBS is considered a hot spot for great white sharks.
