‘Ano Nuevo’ Area of Special Biological Significance (ASBS) is offshore of Ano Nuevo Point and Island, which is north of Santa Cruz and south of Half Moon Bay. This ASBS lies entirely within the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, and has 4.9 miles of coastline. The shoreline also includes the Ano Nuevo State Reserve, managed by the Department of Parks and Recreation. It provides a unique habitat for wintering sea lions and elephant seals. Access to beaches is limited; most visitors to the park are confined to marked footpaths.

Key pollution threats are agricultural, road and stormwater runoff.
