The Santa Barbara and Anacapa Island Area of Special Biological Significance (ASBS) is about 40 miles west of San Pedro. Santa Barbara Island is the smallest of the Channel Islands; only one mile square. Anacapa is only slightly larger and is actually made up of three islets, about five miles long. Both are part of Channel Islands National Park. Santa Barbara Island is in the process of habitat restoration after decades of farming and invasion by non-native species.

Key pollution threats include urban runoff from mainland coastal development and contamination from shipping channels.
