The La Jolla Area of Special Biological Significance (ASBS) has approximately 1.7 miles of shoreline adjacent to the city of San Diego. The ASBS contains 453 acres of marine habitat, including a marine protected area, the La Jolla State Marine Conservation Area (formerly called the San Diego-La Jolla Ecological Reserve). It receives extremely heavy beach traffic, especially at Kellogg Park, which sees up to two million visitors a year. This ASBS is adjacent to the San Diego-Scripps ASBS.
Key pollution threats are urban and storm runoff from the densely developed roads, parking lots, neighborhoods and businesses nearby.
