San Diego Region – Sediment Toxicity TMDLs for the Mouths of Chollas, Paleta, and Switzer Creeks

Background

Sediments in San Diego Bay near the mouths of Chollas, Paleta, and Switzer Creeks are contaminated with anthropogenic chemicals. In addition, these sites contain a degraded benthic macroinvertebrate community, and samples from these areas have demonstrated toxicity to various marine invertebrate species in laboratory toxicity tests. As a consequence, these sites have been identified as areas of impaired water quality. In response to this contamination, the Regional Board has initiated efforts to develop TMDLs for these sites

303(d) Listings

Mouth of Chollas Creek Sediment Toxicity and Benthic Community Degradation
Mouth of Paleta Creek (Seventh Street Channel) Sediment Toxicity and Benthic Community Degradation
Mouth of Switzer Creek PAHs and Chlordane (1)

(1) The listing for lindane was delisted by the San Diego Water Board in the 2008 303(d) List Update adopted on December 16, 2009. The delisting was subsequently approved by the State Water Board on August 4, 2010 and by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on November 12, 2010.

TOXIC POLLUTANTS IN SEDIMENT TMDLS FOR THE MOUTHS OF CHOLLAS, PALETA, AND SWITZER CREEKS

The proposed TMDLs being developed for each water body are as follows

Mouth of Chollas Creek PCBs, PAHs, Chlordane
Mouth of Paleta Creek (Seventh Street Channel PCBs, PAHs, Chlordane
Mouth of Switzer Creek PCBs, PAHs, Chlordane

How to Receive Updates on the Chollas, Paleta, Switzer Creek Mouths Toxics TMDLs

The San Diego Regional Board would like to keep interested persons fully informed during the final approval process for Chollas, Paleta, and Switzer Creek Metals TMDLs, including approval by the State Water Board, the OAL, and the USEPA. Updates on the TMDLs will only be sent to persons that specifically request this information. To receive updates from the San Diego Regional Board, you must either: 1) subscribe to our electronic mailing list; or 2) send an email request to the contact person listed below to have information sent to you via U. S. Mail. You can subscribe to our electronic mailing list. You may also obtain information from our Website or by appointment at the San Diego Regional Board office.
