Project Description: |
Significant portions of the existing rail network within the Installation were installed with the establishment of the Concord Naval Weapons Station in 1942 based on the then current rail industry standards and operations at the time. While originally conceived as primarily being served via 40’ box cars that were unloaded by hand or forklift, current rail operations typically involve containerized cargo packed in 20’ or 40’ shipping containers and loaded/unloaded with container handlers. Rail shipments now routinely arrive on railcars ranging from 50’ to 90’ in length that have more difficulty negotiating curves that were constructed to accommodate shorter cars and locomotives. |
