INTERSTITIAL DETECTOR (LIQUID-PHASE)

Detector:

Output type:

qualitative

Sampling frequency:

continuous

Operating principle:

float switch and polymer strip (Q0003-001, Q0003-002), optical prism and conductivity (Q0003-003), optical prism (Q0003-006), float switch (Q0003-009)

Test Results:
*California requires annual certification of all leak detection equipment. The certification of discriminating sensors should include functional testing of both water and product detection capabilities.

Model Q0003-001 and Q0003-002: Currently the SWRCB UST Program staff discourages the use of polymer strip discriminating sensors at new installations in California. This is due to concerns about the impact that repeated/prolonged exposure to hydrocarbons may have on the sensor's ability to alarm and recover from alarm reliably. Since current evaluation protocols do not address this issue, no new polymer strip sensors should be installed until new evaluation protocols are in place.

Model Q0003-003: This sensor can only respond to liquid directly in contact with the detection element, and is unable to detect a product release floating on an existing pool of water whose height exceeds the level of the detection element.

*The "high" and "low" refer to high and low level alarm points of hydrostatic sensors.

Specificity Results:
Evaluator claims sensors will respond to any liquid.

Comments:
Q0003-001 and Q0003-002 sensors must be cleaned with rubbing alcohol, or dish soap and water after exposure to product.
Sensors are reusable if not completely saturated with product.
