Chowchilla Subbasin

NEW On June 3, 2025, the State Water Board determined that a probationary designation for the Chowchilla Subbasin was not necessary and that it would return the subbasin to Department of Water Resources' oversight.

On March 2, 2023, the Department of Water Resources (DWR) determined that the Chowchilla Subbasin's July 2022 Groundwater Sustainability Plan (GSP) was inadequate. DWR's determination temporarily shifted primary regulatory oversight of the subbasin to the State Water Board. The groundwater sustainability agencies (GSAs) for the Chowchilla Subbasin adopted a revised GSP in March 2025.

The State Water Board reviewed the updated March 2025 GSP and determined the Chowchilla Subbasin GSAs addressed the deficiencies identified in DWR's Inadequate Determination and additional issues identified by Board staff.
